Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

A main determinant of cardiac output is volume, which is influenced by the amount of fluid and venous tone in the venous system. 70% of blood volume resides in the venous circulation. Recruiting volume from an unstressed to stressed state assists in pressure and cardiac output regulation. This session incorporates interactive case simulations targeted for the intermediate level practitioner to illustrate how to recruit an underused volume from an unstressed to stressed ratio for optimal perfusion.

Objectives

  • Compare and contrast the arterial and venous sides of the circulation.
  • Explain methods to assess venous pressure, mean systemic filling pressure and volumes.
  • Apply concepts of stressed and unstressed venous volume in fluid management to daily practice.
