Staff competency assessment and validation is an important part of any patient safety program. Skills fairs are fraught with challenges and are not proven methodologies to better patient outcomes. This intermediate-complexity course shares one hospital's experience on a journey to change its way of assessing and validating employee competence and the lessons that inform its work today.

Objectives

  • Explain two challenges with utilizing skills fairs as a methodology of competency assessment and validation.
  • Discuss why on-demand competency validation is a superior alternative to skills fairs.
  • Evaluate the pros and cons of alternative methods of competency validation.
