Different treatments depending on the valve affected are reviewed. Ethical issues concerning treating patients who continue using IV drug use are also reviewed.

Objectives

  • Review the etiology, risk factors, complications and treatment of infective endocarditis.
  • Identify the different issues and treatments depending on the valve involved.
  • Define the issues of offering valve surgery to ongoing IV drug users.
