Infective endocarditis can be a catastrophic complication of something as simple as dental work, a urologic procedure or sequelae from IV drug use. This intermediate/foundational session discusses the causes, presentation, risk factors, complications and treatment of infective endocarditis. Different treatments depending on the valve affected are reviewed. Ethical issues concerning treating patients who continue using IV drug use are also reviewed.

Objectives

  • Review the etiology, risk factors, complications and treatment of infective endocarditis.
  • Identify the different issues and treatments depending on the valve involved.
  • Define the issues of offering valve surgery to ongoing IV drug users.
