The rising frequency of active shooter events and the pandemic have peaked nurses’ interest in their role in disaster preparedness. Over the past 3 years, nurses have learned how to respond in a pandemic while others have had to respond to active shooter events with little knowledge of disaster procedures. This session covers the essentials of disaster response and some key competencies nurses need to prepare for disaster response.

Objectives

  • List the role of the nurse in a disaster.
  • Describe the roles in the Hospital Incident Command System.
  • Discuss lessons learned in disasters, including active shooter events.
