Nursing burnout is nothing new, but impacts us all at a higher level in the COVID-19 pandemic era. Nurses are often plagued with moral distress, compassion fatigue and general burnout. Dueling Burnout describes an initiative implemented in a cardiothoracic intensive care unit to reduce the level of burnout nurses endure by encouraging dual roles with collaborating departments.

Objectives

Assess national data on nursing turnover, the cost of turnover and nursing shortages.
Review nursing burnout and its contributing factors.
Identify key components of the dual role program and strategies to implement in other spaces.
