Nursing burnout is nothing new, but impacts us all at a higher level in the COVID-19 pandemic era. Nurses are often plagued with moral distress, compassion fatigue and general burnout. Dueling Burnout describes an initiative implemented in a cardiothoracic intensive care unit to reduce the level of burnout nurses endure by encouraging dual roles with collaborating departments.

Objectives

  • Assess national data on nursing turnover, the cost of turnover and nursing shortages.
  • Review nursing burnout and its contributing factors.
  • Identify key components of the dual role program and strategies to implement in other spaces.
