Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

This session reviews the management of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in regard to myocardial infarction, heart failure and hypertension. The physiology and pharmacologic management of the RAAS is reviewed. Pharmacology, indications, contraindications, adverse reactions and nursing considerations are presented. Relevant clinical trials for each class of medications are reviewed to illustrate evidence-based utilization.

Objectives

  • Identify the role of the RAAS in the progression of cardiac disease.
  • Discuss the indications for medications affecting the RAAS.
  • Consider the nursing implications for each class of medications that modify the RAAS, including side effects and monitoring parameters.
