Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Our bodies are continuously exposed to bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. If they invade the deeper tissues, many of these microbes can lead to serious disease. The immune system is composed of blood leukocytes (white blood cells) and tissue cells originally derived from the leukocytes. We discuss the cytokines implicated in the destruction of antigens, as well as injury to the host.

Objectives

  • Describe the mediators (cytokines) responsible for the immune inflammatory response.
  • Identify triggers to the immune inflammatory response.
  • Explain strategies to improve outcomes in patients with a heightened immune inflammatory response.
