Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Examine the pathophysiology of the oral cavity and how it relates to systemic health. We discuss patient populations most vulnerable to poorer outcomes. Examine the current trends in oral care for the intubated patient, and discuss why the regimen is insufficient; discuss and identify structures needed to promote oral health and any potential barriers.

Objectives

  • Discuss the detriments of oral disease for the acute patient.
  • Explain why the current oral care regimen for the ventilated patient is not sufficient in promoting overall health.
  • Identify the systemic structure needed to promote health.
