Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

ICU staff are well-acquainted with resource scarcity thanks to the pandemic. In this session we introduce learners to a front-line, informed, values-based tool to support prioritizing care. Participants engage in an interactive process to identify situations impacting patient care, explore their own values related to prioritizing care in a setting of scarce resources and explore actions to mitigate moral distress.

Objectives

  • Explain how a values-based approach to prioritizing care can support clinical decision-making.
  • Describe practical strategies to prioritize care.
  • Identify personal values and learn how to incorporate them into clinical decisions to decrease moral distress.
