Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

ICU patients experience poor and disrupted sleep as a result of illness, medications, and the ICU environment. This session provides a foundational overview of the causes and consequences of sleep and circadian disruption in critically ill patients. Participants are invited to review the latest evidence shown to improve sleep and circadian alignment, and discuss remaining knowledge gaps. Complex case studies illustrate the relationship between key components of sleep disruption and outcomes.

Objectives

  • Discuss underlying mechanisms contributing to disrupted sleep and circadian rhythms in the ICU.
  • Examine consequences of sleep and circadian disruption, including the development of delirium and post-intensive care syndrome.
  • Identify latest evidence-based interventions shown to improve sleep and circadian alignment in the ICU.
