Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Caring for pediatric patients in today's healthcare setting is complex and sometimes chaotic, especially when caring for a patient that has a behavioral/mental health diagnosis in an acute/critical care area. This session explores the needs of the patient as well as your needs as a frontline care provider, with the goal of increased safety and enhancing the therapeutic relationship between patient and the clinical staff.

Objectives

  • Initiate a de-brief session with staff after a behavioral/mental health event has occurred on the unit.
  • Establish a set of goals for the debrief that focus on learning about the patient and the enhancement of the team.
  • Identify words that will assist in gathering data while developing a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family.
