Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

ARDS pathophysiologic changes alter normal lung mechanics, oxygenation and ventilation, thus requiring a unique ventilation strategy to protect and recruit the lung. In this session, we discuss ventilation mode and setting selection, along with adjustments based on changing conditions. Clinical implications of plateau pressure, driving pressure and intrinsic PEEP are discussed, along with adjunctive support therapies such as prone positioning and neuromuscular blocking agents.

Objectives

  • Describe the pulmomary pathophysiology of ARDS, its impact on pulmonary mechanics and ventilation strategy.
  • Explain the ventilation modes, settings and adjustments used in managing the patient with ARDS.
  • Determine adjunctive support therapies utilized to improve oxygenation and ventilation in ARDS.
