Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Intimidation and a lack of understanding about the clinical presentation and timely management of thyroid, adrenal and pituitary emergencies can delay treatment, leading to patient mortality or morbidity. This session employs case studies and AACN Endocrine Emergency guidelines to present the relevant pathophysiology underlying thyroid storm, myxedema coma, acute adrenal insufficiency, acute hypercortisolism, pheochromocytoma, acute aldosteronism and pituitary apoplexy, and provide attendees with expert tips to help aid quicker diagnosis and implementation of priority, medical interventions.

Objectives

  • Identify risk factors which contribute to the development of select acute thyroid, adrenal and pituitary disorders.
  • Describe clinical biomarkers of selected thyroid and adrenal emergencies, as well as pituitary apoplexy.
  • Develop priority pharmacotherapy and other strategies for selected thyroid and thyroid emergencies, as well as pituitary apoplexy.
