This advanced session focuses on the challenges nurses face when a patient with chronic pain presents with an episode of acute pain from injury, surgery or cancer, or a flare of their current condition. Management of acute and chronic pain using a multi-modal approach, management of acute withdrawal from alcohol and opiates from admission through discharge, along with prescribing guidelines for acute and chronic pain are discussed in this session.

Objectives

  • Verbalize the challenges of treating a patient with acute and chronic pain, including those experiencing acute alcohol and opiate withdrawal.
  • Identify pain management strategies using nonopioid medications for a multimodal approach to pain management.
  • Describe the Opiate Prescribing Laws for Acute Pain.
