Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Morbidity and mortality from sepsis/septic-shock remains high. Simultaneous development of sepsis-associated acute kidney injury negatively impacts clinical courses. Immediate identification and intervention improve outcomes. This intermediate-level presentation reinforces the critical care APRN’s foundational knowledge of sepsis/septic shock, describes the phenomenon of sepsis-associated acute kidney injury and explores options to manage care based on current evidence-grounded theory.

Objectives

  • Classify sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) by definition and diagnostic criteria to recognize those requiring intervention.
  • Discuss the impact of pharmacologic therapies including diuretics, vasoactive drugs and antibiotics on SA-AKI.
  • Construct evidence-supported, theory-grounded clinical decision pathways to improve the quality of care provided by APRNs in the ICU.
