Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

An estimated 55,000 hospitalized children die annually in the United States. During this intermediate session, a case study approach outlines the standardized clinical exam criteria for determining pediatric death. Strategies for managing the pediatric organ donor, including practices for supporting staff and the family during donation after circulatory death, are explored. Participants gain the knowledge to implement interventions families find meaningful at the end of their child’s life.

Objectives

  • Identify the procedures and clinical exam for determining pediatric death using neurologic and circulatory criteria.
  • Apply clinical management strategies to support the pediatric organ donor prior to transplant.
  • Analyze interventions to support the family at the end of their child’s life.
