Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Trauma patients are complex. Multisystem traumatic injuries present complexities particularly when the priorities for one system are the opposite of another. In this session, participants apply management strategies for patients with traumatic brain injury and concurrent hemorrhagic shock by using a complex case study. A review of pertinent medications commonly used, including hyperosmolar therapy and anticoagulation reversal is included, as is discussion of balanced transfusion management.

Objectives

  • Describe the principles of trauma resuscitation.
  • Explain the key differences of perfusion goals based on injury pattern and pharmacotherapies used to achieve these goals.
  • Verbalize pharmacotherapies applicable to a complex polytrauma in the immediate resuscitation phase.
