Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Caring for pregnant patients admitted to the critical care environment can cause anxiety for non-obstetric providers. Knowledge of expected physiologic changes and key practice pearls can boost provider confidence and patient outcomes. This session includes many different case studies includingthe new Joint Commission Standard on peripartum/postpartum hypertension.

Objectives

  • Explain the physiologic changes, including clinical implications, that occur as a patient’s body adapts to pregnancy.
  • Identify practice pearls for critically ill pregnant patients, including for bedside procedures and mechanical ventilation.
  • Articulate the changes in pharmacokinetics and the impact of fetal medication risk on prescribing practices for pregnant patients.
