Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

In the United States, approximately 2,000 people annually are affected by acute liver failure (ALF); 4.5 million are living with chronic liver disease (CLD). This intermediate session offers an overview of the pathophysiology and management of the acute and critically ill patient with ALF, as well as CLD which has progressed to acute decompensated cirrhosis or acute-on-chronic liver failure. Medical and surgical management strategies, including ethical considerations, are reviewed.

Objectives

  • Analyze the pathophysiology of acute, acute-on-chronic and chronic liver diseases.
  • Assess and manage sequelae in critically ill patients with acute, acute-on-chronic and chronic liver disease.
  • Apply evidence-based guidelines, including medications, extracorporeal liver support therapies and transplantation.
