Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

We all desire a peaceful death, for ourselves, our own families and for our patients. As high-acuity nurses, we understand death and dying comes with our roles. However, there remains little academic preparation to guide us in end-of-life processes and withdrawing life support. The goal of this program is to share current and foundational guidelines which encompass the alleviation of actual or perceived suffering and to offer the audience tools to bring into their own practice.

Objectives

  • Describe active withdrawal of life sustaining measures to include ventilator; heated, humidified, high-flow nasal cannula HHFNC and bilevel positive airway pressure.
  • Prepare a respiratory distress observation scale assessment and identify symptom management strategies at end of life.
  • Formulate a sample staff withdrawal-of-life-support guidance sheet for possible application in one’s own facility and nursing practice.
