Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

This presentation reviews cases of children who require ECMO support. We review the indications for ECMO and discuss the differences between VV and VA ECMO. Then, we examine management considerations while on ECMO (ie, anticoagulation, resuscitation, weaning). Complications are discussed and long-term outcome data are presented. Finally, we look at future areas for research.

Objectives

  • Identify three red flags for previously healthy patients who could deteriorate quickly and require ECMO support.
  • Describe common considerations for patients while on ECMO.
  • Discuss complications and long-term outcomes for children placed on ECMO.
