Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

This session provides a foundational review of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), including the physical, cognitive and mental health components. Specific nurse-driven strategies for PICS are outlined through a case study. These include ICU-based strategies (eg, education projects, early mobility and delirium reduction) and postdischarge strategies (eg, post-ICU clinics and support groups).

Objectives

  • Define the characteristics of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS).
  • Identify at lease two strategies critical care nurses can employ to prevent PICS.
  • Describe at least one nurse-driven strategy critical care nurses can implement in the post-ICU period to minimize PICS.
