As our population ages, there is increasing focus on geriatric patients in the acute and critical care settings. Utilizing a case study approach, this session reviews the role of age in the development of cardiovascular disease and the role patient age and functional status play in the management of these disease processes. Clinical guidelines and research data are utilized to outline the management of cardiac diagnoses in the critically ill geriatric patient.

Objectives

  • Discuss the role of advancing age in the development of myocardial infarction, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and aortic stenosis.
  • Identify age-related considerations in the management of myocardial infarction, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and aortic stenosis.
  • Discuss the role of aggressive intervention, medical management and palliative care in the management of critically ill geriatric patients.
