Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Substance-use disorder affects many patients in the ICU. The patient with substance-use disorder requires unique and advanced nursing assessment and interventions. These challenges are only amplified in the mechanically ventilated patient who already requires pain and sedation medications. Case presentations are used to highlight important considerations for the intubated patient experiencing acute substance withdrawal due to alcohol, opioids or methamphetamine.

Objectives

  • Describe clinical signs and symptoms to identify substance-use withdrawal in intubated patients.
  • Explain pharmacologic treatment approaches for management of acute withdrawal symptoms in intubated patients.
  • Identify evidence-based assessment strategies for the intubated patient experiencing acute substance withdrawal.
