Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Post-operative nursing care of the esophagectomy patient involves complex multisystem management and critical thinking skills. The attendee learns about indications, incidence and prevalence of the indications for esophagectomies, as well as nursing management of transhiatal, transthoracic and minimally invasive esophagectomy patients in the critical care and progressive care units. Complications such as chylothorax, anastomotic leak, infections, respiratory complications and arrhythmias are explained and long-term outcomes is reviewed.

Objectives

  • Describe the current surgical approaches to esophagectomies and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • Review the most common post-operative complications of esophagectomies.
  • Discuss multisystem post-operative nursing care of patients following esophagectomy.
