mortality. This advanced session provides a review of standard therapies for COPD and focuses on a minimally invasive treatment with endobronchial valves. Attendees learn how patients selected for this treatment undergo valve implantation. We share our best practices for managing patients in the postprocedural phase to recognize and treat complications early.

Objectives

  • Assess current therapies for emphysema patients with irreversible airway obstruction noted by hyperinflation and loss of elastic recoil.
  • Describe the bronchoscopic approach for endobronchial valves allowing one-way airflow to achieve lobar collapse, reducing air trapping.
  • Review patient management, focusing on early recognition of potential complications, including pneumothorax and COPD exacerbation.
