Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Life-threatening obstructive shock and mechanical emergencies are time-sensitive and require expert consultation or surgical intervention. Timely recognition provides an opportunity for lifesaving intervention. This session teaches clinical reasoning to identify possible pulmonary embolus, cardiac tamponade, tension pneumothorax, aortic dissection and septal or papillary muscle rupture. The learner gains confidence in clinical decision-making and gains potentially lifesaving wisdom.

Objectives

  • Connect patient risk factors for obstructive shock with clinical presentation.
  • Identify bedside physical exam findings used to help rule out obstructive shock.
  • Correlate the life-saving treatment strategies required for obstructive shock to the critical need for rapid diagnosis and intervention.
