Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

This foundational session discusses the dramatic increase in technology in nursing over recent decades. Efficient documentation screens, coupled with enhanced safety mechanisms and easy data review, save time for the nurse. However, automated task lists and multiple data screens can create barriers and decrease the human element of nursing. Monitoring devices create distractions and dependence upon unfiltered data. This may raise the question of whether nurses are relying more on technology and less on therapeutic touch.

Objectives

  • Discuss two positive effects of increased use of technology employed at the bedside to improve patient outcomes.
  • Explore unintentional behaviors related to increased use of bedside technology as they relate to the nurse-patient relationship.
  • Implement strategies to improve therapeutic communication, presence and touch to enhance the nurse-patient relationship.
