Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive disorder that worsens slowly over time, potentially leading to cardiac and respiratory complication. It even can be fatal. Early identification and management can help to improve quality of life and prevent the progression of this debilitating disease. Nurses play a crucial role in symptom assessment, implementing treatment and educating patients and families on pulmonary hypertension medications.

Objectives

  • Define pulmonary hypertension (PH) and its five clinical subgroupings with their predisposing factors.
  • Explain the treatment guidelines for PH and specific safety measures with the administration of intravenous prostacyclin in PAH.
  • Describe the role of bedside nurses in managing, educating and counseling patients with PAH.
