Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Patient acuity, rapidly evolving clinical challenges and a workforce entering the nursing profession after a unique educational experience throughout the COVID-19 pandemic have created a new perspective to consider when addressing the historic challenge of bridging the gaps of a multigenerational workforce. Despite these challenges, successful implementation of AACN’s six essential standards of a healthy work environment can foster a culture with high staff satisfaction and retention. Authentic leadership, true collaboration and meaningful recognition are necessary to create a healthy work environment for staff to thrive. The facilitators discuss creative application of the six essential standards that have had significant impact in creating and sustaining a healthy work environment for over a decade.

Objectives

  • Analyze and apply the six essential standards of a HWE and their role in building and sustaining nurse satisfaction and retention.
  • Identify generational differences and opportunities for meeting the unique needs of each nurse to enhance job satisfaction and retention.
  • Review challenges with implementation among a multigenerational workforce and methods to sustain job satisfaction and retention.
