Brainstem reflex evaluation is key in brain death protocols. Utilizing guidelines permits participants to gain knowledge of the process for evaluating neurologic death and enables more effective communication with families. Confusion regarding patient age, ancillary testing and waiting periods is clarified. Key concepts include ethical issues and enhancing collaboration with organ donation services. Consistent terminology is integral to developing trust and optimizing family and patient care.
