Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

In this presentation, I share my thirty-plus year journey in critical and progressive care nursing that has taken me from the bedside to academia at the University of California San Francisco School of Nursing, where I am Associate Professor and Director of the ECG Monitoring Research Lab. Foundational research focused on hospital-based ECG monitoring, both positive and negative, is discussed. Attendees learn about building a program of clinical research as a Nurse Scientist.

  • Identify one impact of alarm fatigue on nurses, patients and families.
  • List two strategies that could be used on your unit to reduce unnecessary ECG alarms.
