Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Maternal mortality is on the rise in the U.S. Pregnant and postpartum patients are more likely than ever to spend time in an ICU, yet pregnancy is a state most ICU staff know little about. This intermediate to advanced session discusses maternal mortality trends and uses a focused review of pregnant physiology plus interactive case studies to examine four pregnancy-related disease states which might require ICU admission, increasing the confidence of nurses caring for this population.

Objectives

  • Explain emerging trends in maternal mortality in the U.S.
  • Recognize the differences in pregnant physiology compared to the non-pregnant patient.
  • Discuss the presentation, diagnosis and treatment of hemorrhage, preeclampsia/eclampsia/HELLP and sepsis in pregnant patients.
