Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Nurses overuse PICO—the mnemonic for population/patient/problem, intervention, comparison, outcome—as a fundamental component of evidence-based practice (EBP). This session meets the needs of participants, from beginners to advanced, using EBP to improve outcomes. The session reviews the science behind PICO and the gap created from PICO's overuse. PURPOSE—a mnemonic for population, users, responsible team, problem, outcomes, settings, effort-timeframe—has elements established in implementation science associated with improved adoption of EBP (ie, local context and patient perspective). Missing is representation of the most vulnerable patients. Importantly, PURPOSE is a contemporary solution for diversity, equity and inclusion.

Objectives

  • Identify the background to the ubiquitous use of PICO and the resulting consequences.
  • Discuss how to create an evidence-based practice (EBP) purpose statement using the PURPOSE elements to incorporate patient perspectives and diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Create an EBP purpose statement using PURPOSE elements to apply to one practice learned at the NTI in their setting.
