Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

It is imperative for all nurses to identify, advocate for and provide evidence-based delivery of nutritional therapy. This includes appropriate indications for holding feedings and recognition of refeeding syndrome. Emerging evidence on the gastrointestinal microbiome and effects of early feeding is essential to understand. This session examines the foundational evidence and guidelines for management and care of patients receiving enteral nutrition and is essential for nurses caring for patients in the acute care setting.

Objectives

  • Review the phenomenon of failure to rescue in surgical patients and complications that can lead to this untoward development.
  • Identify potentially effective interventions that nurses can implement to improve postoperative outcomes and prevent complications.
  • Discuss failure to rescue as a quality indicator for nursing and other clinical providers.
