Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

The purpose of this session is to address retention strategies that encourage acute care nurses to remain at the bedside. Of the 4.4 million RNs employed in the United States only 1.8 million work in hospitals. Understaffing, poor working conditions, the threat of violence, moral distress and musculoskeletal injury drive nurses away from the bedside. Creative strategies such as flexible scheduling, continuing professional development, nurse residency programs and hybrid nurse roles are explored.

Objectives

  • Describe the brain drain caused by high turnover in acute and critical care nursing.
  • Identify generational factors influencing engagement, loyalty and meaningful work.
  • Discuss creative strategies to retain both millennial and baby boomer nurses in direct patient care.
