Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Blood transfusion is common in critical care settings and may be lifesaving in some circumstances. However, many studies have reported increased morbidity and mortality in patients who received transfusions. This presentation focuses on some important aspects of blood component transfusion in the ICU, including including red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate, as well as whole blood. Physiologic considerations, indications for transfusion, and a review of serious transfusion reactions are also discussed.

Objectives

  • Articulate how the medical and nursing plans of care differ for the critically ill oncology patient.
  • Articulate the thresholds for transfusion of blood products.
