Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Intended for clinicians in a high-acuity PCU setting, this intermediate-level session explores the physiologic signs, concepts, and diagnostics used to rapidly identify a decompensating pulmonary patient and best practices for resuscitation. Disease pathology, medical and nursing interventions are discussed, including a review of oxygen delivery, ABG interpretation, NIPPV, airway stabilization techniques and basic ventilator modes. An overview of common ventilator alarms is discussed. Suggestions for how to troubleshoot those alarms (e.g. high airway pressure alarm, low tidal volume alarm, acute desaturation, vent dyssynchrony) are presented via an evolving case study.

Objectives

  • Discuss common acute and chronic pulmonary pathophysiology and complications among PCU patients.
  • Evaluate medical and nursing interventions for PCU patients experiencing pulmonary complications.
  • Appraise and apply best practices used to treat those with acute or chronic respiratory insufficiency.
  • Identify common mechanical ventilation challenges and how to troubleshoot to prevent pulmonary decompensation.
