Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

As the resurgence of the PA catheter has emerged, highly skilled nurses need to cultivate a skill in hemodynamic interpretation, catheter troubleshooting and patient management. This session includes a brief overview of cardiopulmonary pathophysiology and a comprehensive exploration of best-practice guidelines for detection and prevention of PA catheter complications and troubleshooting. Case studies illustrate higher-level management strategies in differentiating the types of shock.

Objectives

  • List the clinical indications pertinent to PA catheter utilization and review complications associated with PA catheterization.
  • Identify key hemodynamic principals to differentiate the five types of shock with a focus on cardiogenic shock and septic shock.
  • Analyze patient change in condition associated with septic and cardiogenic shock and apply best-practice interventions.
