Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Pupillometers are now used in over 700 hospitals and are being adopted for use in every critical care setting. Despite the simplicity of use of pupillometers, the information gained goes well beyond the historical terms of brisk, sluggish and fixed. This session explores the rationale and evidence behind using pupillometers outside of the Neuro-ICU. Attendees are provided with a deeper understanding of how to interpret every component of the pupillary light reflex pathway.

Objectives

  • List all 10 of the components of the pupillary light reflex measurements provided for each eye when using pupillometry.
  • Cite examples of why a brisk pupil can be abnormal and a sluggish pupil can be normal.
  • Discuss the body of evidence and future research directions in advanced pupil assessment outside of the neuroscience intensive care unit.
