Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

High-acuity nurses frequently care for patients with severe electrolyte derangements. While many of these may be discovered on routine lab work and addressed, some go on to suffer catastrophic consequences including brain damage, arrhythmia and death. In this intermediate level case-based session we explore the pathophysiology, presentation and management of patients with life-threatening dyselectrolytemia, applying evidence-based strategies to prevent life-threatening emergencies.

Objectives

  • Analyze complex patient cases involving life threatening electrolyte abnormalities effecting the cardiac, nervous and musculoskeletal system.
  • Differentiate between signs/symptoms of electrolyte induced pathology related to imbalances of potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium.
  • Apply evidence based strategies and nursing interventions to correct and mitigate the harmful sequelae of electrolyte imbalances.
