Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

End-of-life care is challenging in the absence of advance directives and when patients lack the capacity to make their own decisions. Healthcare disparities further complicate the nurses' efforts to support the right to self-determination. This comprehensive, high-level review leads participants through interactive case-based exercises, with a focus on Black and LGBTQ+ patients, to demonstrate effective communication, with ethical and legal implications interwoven throughout.

Objectives

  • Analyze health care disparities that impact goals of care at the end of life.
  • Examine ethical and legal considerations prominent in end-of-life care situations.
  • Discuss implicit biases impacting goals of care discussions and patient management.
