Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

An estimated 1.4 million patients survive sepsis each year in the United States. Survivors often face many physical, mental and emotional challenges following their initial hospitalization. Hear a sepsis survivor and bilateral below-the-knee amputee discuss her ICU stay, recovery and life after sepsis. This intermediate session provides unique insight to the patient experience and strategies to interact with patients and their families to enhance survivorship.

Objectives

  • Describe the physical and mental sequelae many sepsis survivors can experience.
  • Identify in-hospital strategies to minimize or prevent post-sepsis conditions.
  • Summarize best practice patient and family education tools and resources to utilize in acute care and recovery.
