Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Moral suffering occurs when nurses cause harm to those in their care, witness trusted colleagues cross a line, meet violence at work or feel betrayed by healthcare systems or society. These disorienting realities can undermine nurses’ identity, integrity and wellbeing. Using experiential practices, the sources and consequences of moral suffering, the learner discovers strategies to cultivate moral resilience in order to buffer the detrimental impact and empower nurses to restore their integrity and wellbeing.

Objectives

  • Define moral suffering and its dimensions, prevalence and common sources in healthcare.
  • Describe the components of moral resilience and its application to critical care nursing practice.
  • Apply promising practices to cultivate moral resilience in response to situations of moral adversity in critical care.
