Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Participants in this session learn the complex pathophysiology of a patient with an active malignancy. We discuss the trajectory of the care for the oncology patient and how the treatments for active malignancies can require an ICU admission. We discuss hazardous medications and the impact that these medications have when a patient becomes critically ill. We discuss how the sequelae of oncology treatment have unique presentations and require unique interventions. Participants learn how the goals of care and standard ICU treatment plans are altered in patients with active malignancies.

Objectives

  • Discuss the complex pathophysiology of the patient with an active malignancy.
  • Explain how the medical and nursing plans of care differ for the critically ill oncology patient.
  • Describe three essential nursing interventions for the critically ill patient with sequelae of oncologic treatment.
