Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

The nursing profession exemplifies caring and compassion, yet incivility exists in all areas of nursing. Unhealthy work environments perpetuate bullying behaviors, contribute to burnout and threaten patient safety, even more so in the post COVID-19 pandemic era. The elements of the AACN Healthy Work Environment Standards are emphasized to create a culture that promotes positive relationships. This foundational exploration describes interventions to eliminate incivility in the workplace.

Objectives

  • Describe three bullying behaviors found in the nursing workplace.
  • Identify effects of incivility for nurses, students, patients and employers.
  • Explain three strategies for addressing bullying and incivility to create a healthy workplace.
