Increasingly, healthcare professionals and patients consume scientific findings reported in the news and on social media. However, findings are often misrepresented, misinterpreted or difficult to decipher, leading to confusion about the validity and accuracy of what’s being reported. This session provides a foundational overview of common inaccuracies in publicly reported data, providing tips to interpret this information in the context of acute and critical care nursing.

Objectives

  • Identify ways in which scientific data are reported publicly, and explain how data can be misinterpreted and misrepresented.
  • Appraise publicly reported scientific information in order to become better consumers of evidence for yourself and your patients.
  • Apply learnings to real-world scenarios in acute and critical care nursing.
