Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

ICU culture has led clinicians to believe patients are sleeping peacefully during continuous sedation and that humane, optimal care is provided with sedation during mechanical ventilation. In this presentation we hear survivor perspectives on sedation, delirium, post-ICU PTSD and post-ICU dementia. Sedation pharmacology is discussed in the context of the ABCDEF bundle and PADIS guidelines.

Objectives

  • Consider patient perspectives on continuous sedation and delirium during and after time in the ICU.
  • Review the pharmacology of sedation and the role it plays in patient outcomes.
  • Assess risk for, prevent and treat delirium in the ICU through evidence-based sedation and mobility practices.
