Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is utilized to assess stroke patients in hospitals around the country. While this assessment training is standardized, the training videos utilize alert, nonintubated patients, leaving critical care nurses with a knowledge deficit in applying this assessment to our patient population. The facilitator uses role play to demonstrate how to effectively assess the stroke patient who is intubated, sedated and/or unresponsive, as commonly seen in our critical care areas.

Objectives

  • Apply the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale assessment in an intubated, sedated and/or unresponsive stroke patient
  • Describe the neurological deficits seen based on location of stroke.
  • Identify common barriers to neurologic and stroke assessment and assessment techniques to overcome them.
