Evidence-based infusion therapy practice is essential to optimize patient outcomes in critical care. Infusion Nurses Society Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice are global, evidence-based clinical guidelines in areas such as central line insertion, vasopressor administration, extravasation and complex medication regimens. This foundational presentation describes the methodology used to revise the 2024 Standards, illustrate application in critical care and identify research priorities.

Objectives

  • Explain the methodology used to revise the 2024 Infusion Nurses Society Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice.
  • Describe the application of the Standards to inform clinical practice in critical care.
  • Identify current research trends and priorities in vascular access selection and management in critical care.
